The Myth of Osiris Death

MYTHOLOGY AND FOLKTALE

Geb, the earth god and Nut, the sky goddess had four children-Osiris, Isis, Set and Nepthys. Osiris was god of sun, Isis represented the Moon, Set looked over the desert and Nepthys was associated with night. Osiris married Isis while Set took his sister Nepthys as his wife. As the oldest sibling, Osiris became the king of Egypt who was respected by all the beings.

On the other hand, Set was jealous of Osiris because of everything he had. So, to deal with his brother he formed a plan and invited him to a party. Everyone was invited to play a game where every person would try to fit into the chest, if they succeeded, the winner can take the chest.

No one succeeded till Osiris turn came because the chest was designed to be of Osiris’s size. When Osiris when in, Set quickly closed and sealed the chest before dumping it into Nile River.

Isis learned about her husband’s death and Nepthys decided to help sister secretly in her quest of search for Osiris. She found his dead body after searching for days.

She wanted to resurrect him so she went to make preparation. But Set found the body again and to make sure he could not come back, he cut Osiris into fourteen pieces and scattered them across Egypt. Isis still did not give up and turned to a bird with sharp eyes to travel across Egypt in search of her husband.

She collected all the parts and resurrected him. Osiris became the god of underworld and they had a child named Horus. Horus grew up without his uncle’s knowledge and challenged Set when he became an adult. At the end he got back his rightful throne.

The myth of Osiris and Isis showed us her devotion and love. Isis exhibited determination and did not give up looking for her husband despite Set attempt to stop her.

The victory of Horus is an example of good will always triumph over evil at end the end. The order was restored and the justice was served, bringing balance (ma’at). Ma’at is a importance concept in Egyptian Mythology which appears is many stories.
