The tiger and the persimmon-Korean Folktale

MYTHOLOGY AND FOLKTALE

There was a small quiet village surrounded by trees and hidden between the mountains. In the mountain behind the village, a tiger lived in a dense forest. The tiger was huge and ferocious which made both humans and animals fear going near the mountain.

One day in the winter, the forest and the village was covered with dense white snow. The tiger was hungry so he went down to the village to hunt. While passing through a house, suddenly there was a loud cry and the tiger stopped in the tracks.

The crying of baby was growing louder and louder, showing no signs of stopping and the tiger found the sound annoying. The tiger slowly crept below the window deciding to eat the child who making the irritating sound. Just before the tiger could take action, the child’s mother began talking in a loud voice which attracted the tiger’s attention.

The mother pointed in one direction and said there is a fox, if he keeps on crying the fox will eat him. But the baby still kept on crying, the mother did not give up and again tried to distract him. This time she said there is a large bear, the bear will eat him up with his huge jaws.

The crying continued in the room while the tiger outside the house was impressed. He had never seen a human who was not scared of a fox or a bear, this baby is fearless. All of a Tiger’s stomach ached and suddenly remembered why he came down the mountain.

The tiger wanted to leap into the room once again when the mother began talking once again and said there is a tiger outside the window. Tiger paused, he was curious, will the baby be scared? He peeked from the window to watch the baby’s reaction.

The child crying still echoed, there was no hint of fear on the baby’s face. The tiger was confused, how can a baby not fear him, everyone fears him but the confusion did not stop his desire to eat the baby.

He crouched to jump in the room when the mother shouted, ‘There is a persimmon’.

The baby’s crying abruptly stopped and the silence surrounded the house. The tiger below the window was terrified, a persimmon, what is that? He had never heard of such creature. A creature that can make a baby who does not fear the tiger stop, this creature must be even more fearsome than him.  

The tiger turned around and swiftly left the village in fear with the thought the persimmon must not see him.
