The Judgement of Paris
MYTHOLOGY AND FOLKTALE
This is a major part of Greek and Roman Mythology, the story is depicted in a famous picture where all the three goddess are nude as most of the Greek paintings.
The famous epic story of Trojan War began with Judgement of Paris, becoming one of the reasons for the war. It happened when Eris was not invited to Peleus and Thetis grand wedding since she was goddess of discord and may disrupt the wedding.
Offended by such act, Eris threw a golden apple in revenge on which ‘to the fairest’ was written. The revenge was successful as it sparked a dispute between three goddess-Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. They asked Zeus to choose one but he did want to get involved in the conflict, he asked Paris of Troy to choose who was known for his fairness.
To show their best self, the three goddess bathed in the spring of Ida then met Paris on Mount Ida. Hera, the goddess of marriage, women and childbirth tried to bribe him with the offer to make him the King of Europe while Athena, the goddess of wisdom, warfare and handicraft said she would give him wisdom and skill in warfare if he chooses her. Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty and love offered him the world’s most beautiful woman.
Paris accepted Aphrodite offer thus making her the winner. Queen of Sparta and the wife of Menelaus was the most beautiful woman in the world. Paris abducted her which began the Trojan War between the Greek and the Trojans.
